Treatment Overview

  • At Rix Orthodontics we provide most orthodontic options that are available including:
    • expanders
    • braces
    • clear aligners (like Invisalign)
    • removable functional appliances (Myobrace)
    • retainers and other removable appliances
    • accelerated orthodontic technologies such as Acceledent or Propel
    • orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT)
    • breathing therapy

Children

  • A significant portion of treatment in our office is early treatment, also known as interceptive treatment, for children between the ages of 6 and 10 years.
  • At this stage of development there is a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth.
  • Treatment at this stage is usually accomplished in our practice using a removable functional appliance (Myobrace) in conjunction with associated exercises to correct an orofacial myofunctional disorder.
  • Conventional orthodontic techniques such as expanders and braces are sometimes required with this interceptive treatment.
  • Successful treatment at this age can significantly reduce or sometimes eliminate future treatment.
  • This early treatment can return growth of the face, jaws and teeth to a more normal pattern and have that corrected growth expressed as the child grows into adolescence.
  • In some circumstances this interceptive treatment can start as early as 3 years of age.

Adolescents

  • Another significant portion of treatment in our practice is during adolescence.
  • This is the age group that most people associate with orthodontic treatment.
  • Having braces has almost become a “rite of passage” for adolescents.
  • Clear aligner therapy (like Invisalign) has become a frequent treatment for adolescents and can work very well.
  • We offer the inclusion of orofacial myofunctional therapy in adolescent treatments where an orofacial myofunctional disorder is present along with braces or clear aligner therapy.
  • Treatment in this age group is sometimes started with a removable functional appliance (Myobrace). Some of these cases are finished with the Myobrace and no braces or clear aligners are needed.
  • In other cases, a significant amount of the treatment is done with the Myobrace and then braces or clear aligners are only required for a relatively short time (6 to 8 months) near the end of treatment.
  • Treatment with braces or clear aligners usually takes around 18 to 21 months.

Adults

  • Another significant portion of treatment in our office is adult treatment.
  • There is really no age limit on when orthodontic treatment can be done as long as the teeth, bones and gums are healthy.
  • Clear aligner therapy (like Invisalign) is frequently an acceptable treatment method for adults although braces are still a choice.
  • Orofacial myofunctional therapy is offered where there is an orofacial myofunctional disorder present. Joint and facial pain, as well as sleep issues, are sometimes resolved with orthodontic treatment along with orofacial myofunctional therapy.
